First Responders Appreciation Day June 10th.

Evolution Martial Arts Academy is hosting a first responders appreciation day on Sunday June 10th as a thank you for their hard work in our community.  They are the ones protecting us, keeping us safe, and helping us out with any type of emergency.  First responders are usually taken for granted and we wanted to make sure they are recognized for everything they do.  This event is only open to them and their families.  We will be offering free CrossFit classes for the adults and martial arts for their children if they decide to come.  Its a great way for everyone to meet, hangout, and have a good time.
Class times will be:
  • 9am
  • 10am
  • 11am
There will also be a free BBQ lunch and snacks.  We will be raffling off prizes throughout the event.  If any first responders are reading this please join us and wear your departments shirt.  If you don't want to actively participate in the workouts please just stop by anyways.  It would be nice to just meet you and your family.  Please bring your business card, we will use them to draw names for prizes.  If you know any first responders out there, LAPD, LAFD, EMT, etc who maybe interested let them know and email or share this link, use the buttons provided below.

New Changes to CrossFit Ranking System

As you all know the point system is pretty fun and exciting.  People are telling us they visit the site regularly to see how they have been moving up the rankings after each class.  It has been hard keeping the playing field "fair" points wise.  Here are a few changes that are going to be made.

  • If you do a WOD at prescribed weight please put RX next to your time.  You must complete the entire workout at the weights written on the board to qualify.  You will receive +5 points to whatever your point ranking was.  
  • If you do Pull-Ups through out the entire WOD without assistance bands you will receive +2 points. 
  • If you do the WOD at prescribed weight and Pull-Ups without bands you will receive +7 points.
  • If the coaches feel your technique was incorrect or sloppy you can possibly lose points.
Any changes will be made to give a more accurate ranking system.  Consistency is still key to CrossFit and the Rankings, the more you come the more points you receive.

Special Holiday Weekend Class Schedule

We will be open this weekend but limited class times.

  • Friday 5/25 will be open normal hours 5pm and 6pm class.
  • Saturday 5/26, ONE class 10am.  TEAM WOD
  • Monday Memorial Day 5/28, ONE class 6pm.  SPECIAL WOD.
We will remind you all today in class.  We will send out an email.  If you know anyone who isn't on FB or doesn't check our website, text them or call them.  If we dont see you have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. Thank you.

Lets support Lily our youngest CrossFitter as she is singing for a great cause.

Please come join Mr. Jason and Mr. Brandon as they go and support Lily Fair singing live at Cafe Cordiale in Sherman Oaks.  Lily has a 45 minute set from 9:30-10:15pm on Wednesday June 13th.  This is her last performance for a little while.  The event is FREE but all they ask for is a donation which all goes to the Claire's Place Foundation.  The Claire's Place Foundation is a non-profit organization designed to help children and families affected by Cystic Fibrosis.  The foundation is named after Claire Wineland who has been Lily's best friend since they were kids.

Lets go out and show some support for our very own Lily and contribute to this great cause.  Let us know if you are interested in joining us.  An estimated head count will be needed so that a table or two can be reserved early before everything is taken.  Lets all wear our Evolution or CrossFit shirts and represent our academy.  It will be a fun night.

We have developed a CrossFit Ranking System to promote a little Healthy Competition


EDIT 5-14-12:  All members will be on the list.  If you decide you would not like to participate please email us.  Our thoughts are not everyone will want to aim for the number one spot but if you know you rank pretty close with someone, this could be a good way to give you a bit more gas.

Ok we have developed a Ranking System.
This is our way of inspiring a bit of HEALTHY competition in our CrossFit family.  If you would like to be added to the list or would like to be removed from the list please let us know.  Some of us like competing with our friends because it makes us work harder and we all ultimately get better together.  A chart will be viewable on our website in the near future.

This is how the point system works:

1. After every WOD, times are recorded on the board along side the CrossFitters name.
2. We take this list and sort everyone throughout the entire day. (WOD Leaderboard on home page)
3.  In that entire list if there are 15 people participating in this Ranking System, the top person's time or score from WOD will net him or her 15 points.  The last person will receive a point of 1.  
4.  On WOD Leaderboard there is a column that states how many Pts you receive based on your time.  If your time is the same as someone else, you both receive the same amount of points.
5.  The more points you have the higher your ranking.
6.  Some points can be modified by coaches based on any reason, they seem fit.
7. All points and Rankings will RESET at the beginning of every Month.

TIP: The more you don't come to class, the more you lose out on gaining any points.  Thus others will gain ground.  

Again this is a fun way to train and get motivated.  If you would or would not like to participate please feel free to let us know.  If at any moment we feel like this becomes a distraction and starts to bring down our CrossFit community we will remove this completely.  Please remember its not about who's ranked first, its about each person getting better.  HEALTHY COMPETITION.


Our Website has Officially Launched.

Our website was officially launched earlier today.  We gave a few screen shots in the February 2011 post, since then a lot of good changes have been made.  The goal of the site has remained the same and many more features are coming soon.

We still believe that our site is a tool that can be used to be informative and a way to build closer relationships with the people in our Academy (hint for something coming).

For our current CrossFit students the WOD Leaderboard is updated daily, hopefully even right after every class.  Please visit our home page to check and record your times and weight lifted.  To keep the fun of not knowing what the workout is you will see a "?" under the SW and WOD section.  Toward the end of the day the actual SW and WOD will be posted.  This will keep the mystery for students coming to a later class.

As always check under recent news on the home page for the latest news about fitness, martial arts, and what is going on with the studio (Days closed, exam dates,etc...).  As Evolution grows so will this site.
